Lifemap - Tree of Life
Lifemap is an educational and reference tool available on the iPhone platform. Developed by Laboratoire de Biometrie et Biologie Evolutive, this free program allows users to explore the tree of life in an interactive manner, similar to exploring geographic maps.
The tree displayed in Lifemap is a simplified version of the taxonomy provided by the NCBI and contains approximately 800,000 species. Users can click on each node, including species, to access information and pictures retrieved from Wikipedia. Additionally, Lifemap offers the ability to compute and visualize the "route" between two taxa or clades in the tree.
Lifemap was written by Damien de Vienne, a CNRS researcher at the Biometry and Evolutionary Biology Laboratory in Lyon, France. For more in-depth information on Lifemap, readers can refer to the article published in PLoS Biology.
